    Understanding Eagle Syndrome

A quick guide to symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. If you are newly diagnosed, or think you might be, start here.

    What Is Eagle Syndrome?

Eagle Syndrome is a debilitating, multi-system condition caused by an elongated styloid process or a calcified stylohyoid ligament compressing nearby nerves, blood vessels, and soft tissue in the neck. It is also known as Stylohyoid Syndrome or Elongated Styloid Process Syndrome. Patients often spend years undiagnosed because the symptoms mimic dozens of more common conditions, from migraines and TMJ to anxiety and chronic fatigue.

    Common Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending on which structures are compressed. The most frequently reported include:

    • One-sided throat pain
    • Facial, ear, or jaw pain
    • Headaches and migraines
    • Neck pain worsens with movement
    • Pain when swallowing
    • Tinnitus or dizziness
    • Brain fog
    • Visual disturbances
    • Voice changes
    • Worsens with head turning

    How It Is Diagnosed

The gold standard is a 3D CT scan with reconstruction of the styloid process. Standard 2D imaging and panoramic OPG dental X-rays frequently miss the condition because length alone is not the only factor. Angle, thickness, and 3D spatial orientation all matter. Diagnosis requires a clinician who understands the condition and the right imaging protocol.

    Treatment Options

Conservative care can ease symptoms but does not address the underlying anatomy. The definitive treatment is surgical resection of the styloid process. The external (transcervical) approach allows the most complete resection and is increasingly considered the gold standard. Recovery is typically a 12 to 18 month nerve-recalibration journey.

    When to See a Doctor

If you have unexplained one-sided throat, ear, or facial pain lasting longer than a few weeks, especially after a tonsillectomy, dental procedure, or neck trauma, ask your physician about Eagle Syndrome and request a 3D CT scan. You can download our Physician Advocacy Packet to bring to your appointment.
